Nine more days.... until Food Revolution Day May 16th! To date, 100,500 participants have signed up in 100 countries for the big day!
Jamie says, "We need every child to understand where food comes from, how to cook it, and how it affects their body. This is about setting kids up with the knowledge they need to make better food choices for life." What better way to get your kids engaged by hosting some food activities in their school. I emailed my twins principal at their Montessori school about having the classes participate in paper exercises provided by Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution site and she obliged. The exercises are fantastic thought-starters for teachers and children to evolve a discussion around food. One of them is a matching assignment (Where Their Food Comes From)- match the final prepared food and its originating source, such as bees and honey, and wheat and bread. According to the site, in Australia, 20% of children believe that pasta comes from animals and in the UK, one in five primary school children believes that fish fingers come from chicken. Children from around the world are so out of touch with what's on their plate, they can't even recognize where fresh ingredients comes from. Seeing these statistics makes me wish I was on the school board- I'll make every school get involved to do something!
I also plan to bake up some chocolate raisin oatmeal cookies to send to the kids school for a nice homemade snack and to contribute to cooking something from scratch and sharing it. These things can seem small but you can make a big impact to inspire others for change!
Other things you can talk to your schools to do:
* Get your school signed up for to Jamie's live cooking lesson to make the rainbow salad wrap- be part of the Guinness World Record attempt.
* Download a Food Revolution Day recipe and cook from scratch.
* Bring in different fruits and vegetables and have the children share and try them.
* Encourage the children to choose healthier options at the cafeteria.
* Download the official school's action pack before Food Revolution Day.
